Twitter to let all users filter tweets for higher 'quality'

Twitter has answered the wishes of everyone who ever wanted to hide a troll's hateful tweet from creeping up in their mentions.

Starting Thursday, some Twitter users will be able filter their notifications so they only see mentions from people they're following.

For starters, the company is adding a new "quality filter" option to your notification settings that, when enabled, prevents you from seeing "lower-quality content, like duplicate Tweets or content that appears to be automated" in your notifications and other parts of Twitter.

The feature, which was first released in 2015 but only available to verified users, works nearly like a protective bubble - blocking messages from unfamiliar accounts. In a Sunday tweet, developer Brianna Wu, who was caught up in GamerGate harassment, said she has "not seen a single death threat or rape threat since being verified and getting the 'quality filter'".

Twitter began testing the feature a year ago, and it seems to work as intended. Similarly, you'll get notifications from people you follow or people you've recently interacted with. That includes messages from accounts with which you debated or argued.

Some have already questioned how effectively the filter will tackle the problem of non-spam accounts which harass or abuse other users.

It also remains to be seen if this will resolve Twitter's harassment issues, which seem to grow more compromising by the day.

"In pretty much every case, Twitter's quality filter blocked the outrageously obscene and threatening tweets, while still allowing the merely critical and disagreeable in". Twitter later called the piece "unfair" but acknowledged that the site still had "a lot of work to do".
