20 percent of Kentucky grads hit all ACT college benchmarks

More than 39,800 graduating seniors in Utah took the test this year, earning an average composite score of 20.2 - virtually unchanged from last year.

Carson City School District's composite score was higher than the state average at 17.955.

"Our ACT testing participation rate is exceptionally high, and when you compare our participation rate and our results, it is clear WCS students are second to none", Superintendent Mike Looney said.

The district has evaluated how ACT scores equate to postsecondary education opportunities including scholarships, Wilson County Director of Schools Donna Wright said. This is a testament not only to the hard work of our students, but also to the diligent efforts of District 308 teachers, support staff, and administrators. That number is up from 20.8 for the class of 2015.

The number of MS students tested rose by 6,000 to 36,000. The current state average for ACT composite is 19.9.

Forsyth County's district score remained the same as in 2015 - Georgia and the nation both increased from 21.

The overall state average matched the national average, which was down from 21 for the class of 2015. More students nationwide took the exam this year.

That continues a five-year trend that has seen the scores inch up - and a good sign given that up until this school year, all high school juniors in MI were required to take the ACT. In the past, the state has paid for public school juniors to take the ACT, but plans to switch to the SAT exam this spring instead.

The report showed a relatively wide gulf, by race, in the percentages of graduates hitting three or more of the college-ready benchmarks.

ACT sets minimum scores to indicate college readiness by subject.

30 percent are college-ready in all four subjects, compared with 26 percent statewide and 26 percent nationally.

Kansas tested 74 percent of its 2016 graduating class, or 24,488 students, the largest number in five years.

St. Paul Public Schools was one year ahead of the state in testing all of its students.

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education said the latest results reflect the performance of an entire senior class.

The ACT tests students in English, math, reading and science.

Seventy percent of Kansas students this year met the English college readiness benchmark, compared to 61 percent nationally.
