Filipino Fisherman Reveals 75-Pound Pearl He Kept Hidden For A Decade

Also discovered in the Philippines, but way back in 1934, the pearl weighs 14 pounds and is worth $35 million.

A fisherman in the Philippines found a giant 34kg pearl worth US$100million.

Maggay-Amurao's Facebook post about the discovery calls for locals and Filipinos everywhere to raise awareness about what might be the new world's largest pearl - and her efforts to have the giant pearl verified.

This enormous pearl was found off the coast of Palawan Island in Phillipines in 2006 but the fisherman who found it simply thought it was unusual enough to keep as a good luck charm under his makeshift bed in a hut, for 10 years.

It's more than 2 feet long and 1 foot wide, CNN reports.

The world's biggest pearl might have been discovered almost a decade ago, but no one knew about it until now.

A fisherman from Palawan, Philippines has kept the "mother of all pearls" under his bed for 10 years without realizing the potential value of the gem.

He couldn't take the pearl as it was very heavy and big, therefore he handed it to his aunt, Aileen Cynthia Maggay-Amurao, who works in local government as a tourism officer.

A decade ago, an unidentified angler caught a 75-pound pearl in the sea surrounding Palawan Island, which is now believed to possibly be the largest pearl to ever surface on land.

In 2003, Michael "Buzz" Steenrod, a gemologist based in Colorado Springs, estimated the value of the Pearl of Allah at $93 million.

Currently, gemologists have been examining this giant pearl and will determine its authenticity. The fisherman, whose name has not been disclosed, discovered it by sheer chance when the anchor of his boat become lodged on a giant clam.

The Pearl of Lao Tzu, previously known as the Pearl of Allah, weighed 6.4 kilograms. "I just became aware when I searched the internet that all giant pearls came from here; sad to know none of those were left in the possession of the city or province", she said.
