Spotify Denies Report That It Targets Musicians Who Deal With Apple Music

Spotify Denies Report That It Targets Musicians Who Deal With Apple Music

It's a very different approach to Spotify and Apple Music, which gain a lot of via mobile apps.

This came in response to the negative reaction to Frank Ocean's new album Blonde, arriving as an Apple Music exclusive seemingly without gaining permission from Universal.

Spotify directly suppresses tracks from artists that have previously signed exclusives with Apple Music or Tidal in search results.

Vodafone has employed a similar content strategy in a bid to attract users, offering inclusive Netflix, Sky Sports Mobile TV and Spotify to its 4G subscribers. Voice control for Apple Music is not available on Android devices, however. They then pay 15% to music publishers and songwriters so right there 70% of their revenue is taken before they can do anything with it.

It seems as though Spotify and Apple Music aren't becoming friends, rather rivals.

This isn't the first time that higher ups at Spotify have spoken out against the nature of exclusives.

While Apple Music managed to rope in many iconic music artists - Taylor Swift and Drake, to name a few - chances are UMG's decision will negatively affect the company's service as Taylor Swift signed to that record label.

Spotify has previously called exclusives bad for artists and bad for listeners. The singer has made the decision to keep They Don't Know off all streaming services - including Tidal, of which Aldean is a partial owner - for the first month of its release. If they disappear, the music-streaming service landscape could be blown wide open, with consumers potentially being able to choose any service yet get the same catalogue of music.

Marc Allera, chief executive officer of EE said: "We're delighted to be the first United Kingdom operator to offer Apple Music, with its incredible catalogue of songs, playlists, and Beats 1 radio". Because the music industry can not afford to have their superstar artists leave the label system altogether for streaming services, UMG may be trying to prevent a power shift.
