Police Look at Bus Owners in Deadly Wreck

Part of the guard rail shows some damage near a bus after a deadly crash on Interstate 10 near Laplace, La., Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016. Firefighters were responding to a crash on I-10 Westbound near Belle Terre Boulevard when another vehicle crashed into the scene of that accident. Jesse Wimberly of Mandeville says that the bus driver apparently was hired by the company that owned the bus.

Officials with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have issued a detainer for the driver, an undocumented 37-year-old old man named Denis Yasmir Amaya Rodriguez, after he was charged with negligent homicide, negligent injuring, reckless operation and driving without a license.

There were 35-40 people on the charter bus who were also transported to local hospitals with minor to moderate injuries. They say he doesn't have a driver's license and is in the US illegally.

Matey says the firetruck was blocking traffic from the scene of an earlier crash.

Authorities identified the bus company that was used as AM Party Bus and Kristina's Transportation LLC.

The bus then struck a pickup truck before hitting three firefighters who were by the guardrail, sending them 30-40 feet over the edge of the interstate into the water below.

St. John the Baptist Parish Fire Chief Spencer Chauvin, 36, died, and a passenger in another auto that was also struck was killed, Louisiana State Police spokeswoman Melissa Matey said.

Other injuries - including the Titan's two occupants, who suffered minor injuries in the original crash - ranged from minor to moderate, Matey said. The St. John the Baptist Parish Office of Fire Services had been on the scene dealing with a motor vehicle accident involving a truck crash when Denis Rodriguez plowed into the cordoned off area of the highway, the NY Daily News reports.

She says the bus was carrying flood recovery workers from New Orleans to Baton Rouge.

Matey tells local news media that the dead included a local fire chief and the injured included the 30 to 40 people on the bus.

One firefighter and a passenger from MS died.

The front seat passenger in the Camry, Vontravous Kelly and rear seat passenger David Jones, also of Moss Point, were taken to University Medical Center, where Kelly is listed in critical condition and Jones in serious condition. "This was a horrific accident and one that is still very active". The front seat passenger in Tate's auto, identified as Vontravous Kelly, and the other rear seat passenger, identified as David Jones, both of Moss Point, were taken to University Medical Center. This type of loss will affect the entire department and they will have our full support as they deal with the grief of losing a comrade. The crash is still under investigation with Homeland Security Investigations assisting the state police.
