Facebook introduces Instant Video for Messenger

Facebook introduces Instant Video for Messenger

Called Instant Video, Facebook says the new feature is aimed at "sharing quick moments with friends who aren't right by your side".

Design wise, the whole experience has been kept identical but now when you tap the "video call" icon while chatting with someone, a floating window will pop up which will commence your live stream instantaneously. Only then will the video button pulse, letting you know you can start an Instant Video.

Readers: What are your thoughts on Facebook's introduction of Instant Video for Messenger? Instant Video requires that both users are running the most recent version of Messenger on either iOS or Android.

"We believe that Instant Video is another example of how we try every day to solve real problems for real people", Facebook said. Snapchat set the trend and Instagram followed it up when Instagram Stories was introduced. Maybe you're walking by a prolific street performer and want to share a video with a friend you're texting, or share a baby giggle with your partner.

Facebook today announced a new - though likely familiar-sounding - feature within its Messenger app, which recently crossed the billion user threshold. In an interesting twist, the video will launch with sound turned off by default, but users can enable sound. Facebook's suggestions for when instant video might come in handy - asking a friend's opinion about a pair of shoes you're considering buying, or "what ice cream flavor to bring home", or watching a friend's reaction to your messages - don't strike me as everyday uses. Collectively, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp have about 2 billion active users, showing Facebook's dominance in the segment.

A good rule of thumb in software these days is that any social product without a video feature is going to get one eventually.
