Former ITT students say school was troubled for a long time

"It is saddening to see thousands of students being educationally stranded with the closure of ITT Tech, the nation's largest for-profit college chain".

The Coding Dojo ITT Impacted Student Scholarship provides up to $4,000 in credit for qualifying students who were enrolled at ITT.

"They didn't even open the door", said student Joan Perez. "We want to step up and assist these students who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in a very hard situation", said Jon Endicott, vice president of enrollment management.

"Many hardworking NY students have enrolled at ITT campuses across the state and invested significant time and resources into their education". SU was the first to offer help, saying it will try its best to transfer scholarships and credits.

The Articulation Agreement is broken down by states and cities.

Palomar College, near ITT Tech's shuttered Vista campus, also plans to roll out the welcome mat with a special webpage offering transfer information.

"Because ITT is a for-profit institution and was not regionally accredited, we won't be able to take some of those credits".

About 70 percent of ITT's annual revenue is federal aid.

The 40,000 current ITT students aren't left with many options and many could be stuck with student loans to pay off and no degree. State and federal authorities say some schools - with profits in mind - lured in vulnerable students with promises they could not keep.

"Either you'd need to greatly expand the state subsidies so that you could expand to meet those needs, or you create big lineups of students trying to get programs and classes, which leads to huge delays for them and an overburdening of community colleges as they exist now", McCluskey said.

Army veteran David Lariviere had planned to complete his bachelor of science degree in cyber security next June at ITT Tech in Arlington.

The company places full blame for its closure on the U.S. Department of Education, which had recently demanded ITT put up $153 million in collateral (double the cash it had on hand) to cover government losses if the company failed.

The schools' academic and operational standards have been called into question by the federal Department of Education in recent years. "That's why over the last seven years the Obama administration has taken a number of actions to protect students, borrowers and taxpayers from the illegal behavior of some institutions and programs".
