Several killed by earthquake in Tanzania: president's office

An quake measuring 5.7 hit Tanzania on Saturday and was felt in nearby Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and Kenya, the US Geological Survey said, as reports came in of collapsed homes.

A police source confirmed the fatalities, while the country's president says many have died.

A statement from the Tanzanian president's office said that he was "shocked by reports of the quake that caused the death of many people, injury to others and destruction of property".

"We now have 11 people dead and more than 100 injured, several of whom have been hospitalized. rescue operations are ongoing", Augustine Ollomi, the Kagera province police chief in charge of the Bukoba district said by telephone.

The statement didn't provide specific figures on casualties.

Condolences are also expressed to the people of Tanzania by this correspondent with best wishes for a speedy recovery for those injured in the quake.

Tremors could be felt as far away as western Kenya, in parts of Uganda, and in Rwanda.
