Big 12 narrows expansion list down to 12 schools

Big 12 narrows expansion list down to 12 schools

The school itself declined to comment, noting that expansion candidates had agreed to nondisclosure agreements with the Big 12. The conference's 10 presidents and chancellors are scheduled to meet October 17, the Big 12 office told The Enquirer. Obviously, Colorado State's status as a Mountain West program casts doubt on the Blaudschun report as well.

While they aren't conference games, Big 12 football begins Friday September 2nd when Baylor hosts Northwestern State and Kansas State visits Stanford.

Those being eliminated from consideration are Arkansas State, Boise State, East Carolina, New Mexico, Northern Illinois, San Diego State and UNLV. According to various reports - all citing unnamed sources - that number has been narrowed to between six and 12.

The Big 12 had reportedly been considering as many as 17 expansion candidates.

It's a newfound awareness that could ultimately pay off for the Pirates should the Big 12 or any of its other Power 5 cousins decide to expand again at some point in the future.

The school's athletic teams now compete in the American Athletic Conference, but joining the Big 12 would put the Pirates in one of the Power of Five leagues that have the highest profiles, especially in the sport of football.

More news: Syrian military denies using Chlorine gas in Aleppo

There have been all sorts of potential scenarios for the Big 12, such as expanding by two schools, by four or not expanding at all.

Colorado State has been linked to the Big 12 for a while and is closer to BYU and Cincinnati than say Rice of SMU in terms of their place at the table.

Daily sports headlines from across Gwinnett County, including high school, professional and college news. Memphis is still uncertain, so the list could jump to 13.

However, in typical Big 12 fashion this ESPN report mentions that even after all of this hubbub the league could stay at 10 teams.
