Broncos LB Brandon Marshall loses sponsor over anthem protest

Broncos LB Brandon Marshall loses sponsor over anthem protest

San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick began the protests when he refused to stand for "The Star-Spangled Banner" during preseason games, at first choosing to sit on the bench and then later kneeling on one knee in a gesture that has divided fans.

COLIN Kaepernick's controversial decision to not stand for the U.S. national anthem before NFL games could gain support when most teams open the season tomorrow - the 15th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

"Although we have enjoyed Brandon Marshall as our spokesperson over the past five months, Air Academy Federal Credit Union (AAFCU) has ended our partnership", president and CEP Glenn Strebe said in a statement.

"Yes, I will kneel again on Sunday", Marshall said, via the Associated Press, on Monday, the same day CenturyLink severed ties with the fifth-year linebacker.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color", Kaepernick said, as his actions triggered a firestorm.

He doesn't regret kneeling for the national anthem ahead of the Broncos' season-opener against the Panthers last Thursday.

CenturyLink followed Air Academy Federal Credit Union in withdrawing their support for Marshall, the Denver Post reports.

The Broncos said they respected Marshall's decision to protest, though added they encourage members to stand during the anthem. "For this reason, while we wish Brandon the best this season, we are politely terminating our agreement with him". "I just have to do what I think is right".

But that's not all, Marshall said, "I had a lot of negative, a lot of racist comments calling me the "n" word, derogatory words".

Marshall was a college teammate of Kaepernick's at Nevada.

"In our view, the national anthem is one of those moments", the reads.

"I thought about it all the way up until when the lady was going to start singing", revealed Marshall, while speaking to Yahoo.com.

The team is reportedly considering protesting the national anthem as a team, though they have not made any decisions on whether or not to actually do the protest. "So when we have an opinion and we speak it, I feel a lot of people bash us for what we have to say".
