Four years ago, former FBI directer Louis Freeh found that Paterno - who was sacked from PSU amid the scandal in 2011 and passed away due to complications from lung cancer in early 2012 -had likely known about Sandusky's serial pedophilia and ignored it. Freeh's investigation concluded that Paterno used his power and influence to stop the university from reporting the abuse to authorities in 2001.
Paterno finished his career as the winningest coach in FBS history with 409 victories, but he was sacked in November 2011, shortly after his former defensive coordinator, Sandusky, was arrested for child sexual abuse.
The plans have spotlighted clear divisions.
Meanwhile, accusations have come to light intimating that Paterno knew about Sandusky's abuse, or the possibility of it, decades ago.

(AP) - As night fell over Happy Valley on Friday, hundreds of Joe Paterno's former players gathered outside the school's baseball stadium to celebrate their accomplishments and the coach who inspired them before he left a polarizing legacy. "A lot of them are just shouting we want Paterno. and they're saying this because it's the Penn State thing to do". Paterno died in January 2012.
If it's concluded that Paterno didn't cover up Sandusky's heinous child abuse as the Freeh Report and court documents allege, he would have no issue with the university honoring Paterno in anyway it chooses. University president Eric Barron has said the allegation was not substantiated in court or tested by any other process. Meanwhile, their own university officials, until now, have mostly acted as if Paterno never existed. Sandusky was convicted in June 2012 on 45 of 48 charges and is serving a 30- to 60-year sentence.
But Hartenstine said he doesn't consider the reunion a celebration of Paterno. She said while she was pleased the university planned to mark the occasion too, the family told the university it wanted the focus of events during the game to be on the players.
Protesters in the stadium turned their backs as a video montage was played honoring Paterno during the game against Temple.
