Washed up whale allegedly died from human interaction, report says

Washed up whale allegedly died from human interaction, report says

Officials believe that the 20-ton, 33-foot whale was dead in the water for several days before washing up on the beach.

A massive humpback whale that washed ashore in Sea Isle City on Friday likely became ill and eventually died as a result of contact with human civilization, according to marine life experts.

Sea Isle City Police tweeted that the whale is dead and crews are attempting to remove it.

The cause of its death is unknown but was now being investigated by officials from the Marine Mammal Stranding Centre.

More news: Explosion rattles New Jersey beach town

Humpback whales, according to the American Cetacean Society, eat krill, small shrimp-like crustacean and small fish as their diet.

Schoelkopf said this was the second whale to beach themselves along the Jersey coast this year.

The mammal weighs about 20 tons. At present, only 30 to 40 percent (about 30,000 to 40,000) of the original humpback whale population exists.

The animal will stay on the beach overnight, and the center will perform a necropsy to determine how the whale died, a process that could take up to eight hours, the report stated.
