Clinton lands support of former Republican senator John Warner

Warner's decision to endorse Clinton is meant to encourage those in Virginia and across the country that security-minded Republicans should cast their ballots for the Democratic nominee.

Warner is set to appear Wednesday morning with Democratic vice presidential nominee and current Virginia Sen.

Warner will join Kaine at a campaign stop in Alexandria to make the announcement at 9:15 a.m. He is also the former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and former Secretary of the U.S. Navy.

Clinton served on the Senate Armed Services Committee when she was a Senator from NY.

Warner, a Marine pilot in the Korean War, scolded Trump, who did not serve in the military, for saying the military was in "shambles", criticizing the Charlottesville parents of a USA officer killed in combat, and expressing delight with being given a Purple Heart medal by a veteran. He assailed Trump's "audacity to degrade the Purple Heart and the military", which he said is "the strongest in the world and not in shambles".

Warner also spoke to Trump's inexperience in national security matters, comparing it unfavorably to Clinton's studied and devoted participation in the Senate Armed Services Committee.

"I am proud to have John's support, and to know that someone with his decades of experience would trust me with the weighty responsibility of being Commander in Chief", she added.

After wrapping up at the lectern, he chose to return for one more shot at Trump, mentioning him by name for the first time. "Got that Trump? Loose lips sink ships". He endorsed Democrat Mark R. Warner over Republican Jim Gilmore to fill his own seat in the U.S. Senate.

But the former senator has never before endorsed a Democrat for president.

Warner, once married to actress Elizabeth Taylor, Wednesday Jeanne Vander Myde in 2003.
