North Elementary named National Blue Ribbon School

North Elementary named National Blue Ribbon School

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

The others were Emma Elementary School in 2001 and Reynolds High School in 2002. Blue Ribbon Schools are considered as some of the nation's most elite educational institutions.

At Gadsden's Eura Brown Elementary, students watched U.S. Education Secretary John King Jr. give a short speech before seeing their school's name appear on the screen.

The award had criteria that mainly focused on student performance indicators, which Norvell said was boosted by the school's proficiency scores on the end-of-grade tests given to third, fourth and fifth graders.

Schools receiving the honor fall into two categories.

State education departments nominate schools to apply for the honor, said Paloma Elementary Principal Dana Spencer.

"The support of the GCPS Board of Education and the buy-in of our families and our larger community is what helps us be able innovate in the classroom and help transform students' lives in order to earn awards like this", Bray said.

"When I started researching, when I heard that Ms. Walsh had claimed that she had won the national Blue Ribbon Award, we started looking into it".

GCPS CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks also said it was a tremendous honor for the students and staff. All of the Iowa honorees were named exemplary high performing schools.

"I am extremely proud of Pisgah for achieving such a prestigious award".

The principals of each will get to go to Washington, D.C., for a ceremony, and the schools will hold local celebrations later in the year.

"The staff and students at South Ripley Junior High School are so deserving of this accomplishment".
