Penguins star Crosby taking it "day by day" after concussion

Penguins star Crosby taking it

Crosby returned to the Penguins that November where, in his first game back, he notched four points against the Islanders.

Pittsburgh superstar Sidney Crosby has been diagnosed with another concussion just days before an National Hockey League season in which the Penguins are expected to make a strong run at repeating as Stanley Cup champion.

Such is the timeline involving concussions. If you're ready, you're ready. He certainly knows they don't come every year. Not the doctors. Not the Penguins.

Not long after Crosby and Fleury left the stage, Sullivan and Rutherford took their turn in the Fan Fest spotlight.

The scary reality is that an athlete like Sidney Crosby, who is not afraid of going down hard in corners and has a history of brain trauma, is subject to the possibility of getting diagnosed with diseases like CTE and such.

Sidney Crosby may be battling his third concussion since 2011, but two Nova Scotia head-injury experts are confident the Cole Harbour-native will make a full recovery. He was leading the NHL in scoring and in the middle of perhaps the best hockey of his career in 2011.

Crosby, a notorious workaholic, needs hockey.

But fate can be cruel indeed. So whether the symptoms were too subtle to phase Crosby or if it was brought on during training is unclear, but if it's the former then one would assume that he's been unknowingly nursing the concussion for a couple of weeks.

Despite the setback, Sullivan disclosed that Crosby has been making progress toward his return. But when he arrived at the rink for the game, he felt off. He went through a few line rushes and special teams drills but also spent a large portion of practice on the bench. Now those staff members are monitoring his status moving forward. "The way (Malkin) slammed into (the boards), it could have been much worse". Just got tangled up in practice on Friday and didn't really think anything of it. Saturday, didn't feel great. You go day by day. After Sullivan took over as coach December 12, Crosby had 30 goals and 33 assists over the final 52 games while eliciting guffaws for his puck possession, shots and passes.

"(Crosby) would have the best support and return-to-play guidance available", Burkey. We've always felt that way.

"This one will be no different". Crosby was diagnosed with a concussion by team doctors Monday.

"I think it is what it is", he said. Part of the challenge for us is to try help Sid get healthy as quickly as possible.

"We'll keep that internally what we're going to do". We don't look at it any other way.

Pittsburgh's star captain has been ruled out for Thursday's home opener against the Washington Capitals after suffering a heavy blow in practice on Friday, head coach Mike Sullivan announced.

The long-term impacts of multiple concussions while undergoing today's protocol are still a bit of a mystery.
