17 die in major fire at a private hospital in Odisha

The magnitude of the fire was so intense that the firefighters had a herculean task to rescue the patients amid thick smoke bellowing from all sides.

The fire is suspected to have started from the dialysis ward of the hospital, possibly due to an electrical short circuit, from where it spread to the Intensive Care Unit and Medicine wards. SUM Hospital deputy superintendent Basant Pati said all patients from the ICU were shifted to other hospitals.

About seven fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the fire. Most of the deaths had occurred during shifting of critical patients. "My thoughts are with bereaved families", Prime Minister Narendra Modi .

Critical patients were shifted to Capital Hospital and three private hospitals.

Voicing "serious" concern over the fire incident at the Sum Hospital, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik described the mishap as "very tragic".

The commissionerate of police and fire brigade personnel along with volunteers and hospital staff launched a massive rescue operation as more than 500 indoor patients were trapped in the building, hospital officials said. Several patients were taken out by breaking glass panes of the hospital, said sources.

Doctors at two local hospitals told the Press Trust of India news agency that 22 people were dead on arrival at their facilities. Nearly all patients have been shifted to safety.

While 14 patients shifted to Capital Hospital have died, eight out of 37 patients shifted to AMRI Hospital have died, the reports added. The team comprises the collector of Khurda, the director of Medical Education and Training (DMET) and the district fire officer.

Notably, fire officials had visited this hospital in 2012-13 and reportedly instructed authorities to comply with fire safety norms.
