In Iran: Iranian-US businessman, father given 10-year sentences

The Namazi family reportedly served under the Shah of Iran before 1979, and have played a key role in bridging ties between the US and Iran.

"We are deeply concerned about reports that USA citizens Siamak Namazi and Baquer Namazi have each been sentenced to 10 years in prison", state department spokesman Mark Toner said.

Iran Hard-Liners Release Video Showing Detained Iranian-American Businessman - Iranian hard-line media have released a video showing detained Iranian-American businessman Siamak Namazi.

Namazi is a son of Baquer Namazi, a former UNICEF representative who once served as governor of Iran's oil-rich Khuzestan province under the USA -backed shah.

An Iranian-American businessman arrested a year ago in Iran was shown in a public video for the first time, released by Iran's judicial news service.

The father and son were each given a single court session lasting a few hours before the sentences were given, Babak Namazi's statement said.

There are no precise details of the charges for which they were convicted. On Tuesday, both he and his 80-year-old father, imprisoned in February, were sentenced to 10 years in prison for unspecified charges related to collaborating with hostile governments.

Siamak Namazi Is a Good Man. Iran Should Release Him - My friend, Iranian-American consultant Siamak Namazi, has been in Tehran's Evin prison for five months.

Siamak Namazi, believed to be in his 40s, is head of strategic planning for U.A.E. -based Crescent Petroleum Co.

Many have criticized a prisoner swap in January that traded seven Iranian prisoners for four Iranian-Americans (including Washington Post correspondent Jason Rezaian), just as the United States lifted sanctions.

The detentions also come as channels of communication slowly open between Tehran and the West following last year's landmark agreement that lifted punishing global sanctions in exchange for restrictions on Iran's disputed nuclear program. Muhammad Ali, America's best-known covert to Islam, is still greatly respected in Iran as a figure of Muslim peace and charity in the world, and the couple had called for the release of prisoners in Iran in the past.

Earlier this week, Mizan posted a minute-long video showing a montage of clips including Siamak in a conference room, his arms raised at his sides, and his US passport.

Iran's deal with world powers lifted most worldwide sanctions and promised Iran's reintegration into the global community in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program.

Rezaian is now is suing Iran's government for "irreparable harm" he allegedly suffered while in prison because of "torture and other cruel treatment". He tells Michele that he believes "Iranian hardliners are just trying to "delegitimize" President Rouhani, whose government negotiated the nuclear deal" reached a year ago.

The arrests have undermined Rouhani's goals of reviving Iran's business and political ties with the West, as well as pushing for more political and social reforms at home, Iran experts and observers said.

Baquer Namazi has a serious heart condition and other medical issues requiring special medication, his wife wrote on Facebook in February.
