Putin, Trump agree to develop relations 'as equals'

Putin, Trump agree to develop relations 'as equals'

Some members of Trump's own party warned him ahead of his call with Putin not to abandon sanctions recently imposed on Russian Federation by former President Barack Obama in retaliation for alleged meddling in the 2016 election.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer chronicled the call to Putin, and the several other world leaders Trump reportedly spent the afternoon connecting with via telephone, with a tweet Saturday afternoon.

President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed during a Saturday phone call how both nations could fight worldwide terrorism and work together to reach peace in the Middle East, according to a statement released by the Kremlin.

"The Presidents called for establishing a real coordination of US and Russian actions to defeat the Islamic State and other terrorist groups in Syria", the statement read.

Both leaders discussed Middle East politics, the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Iranian nuclear program, security on the Korean peninsula, and Russian-Ukrainian relations, the statement said.

"It was agreed to establish a partnership in all these and other areas".

The "priority" in their talks was the fight against global terrorism. They also touched upon the main aspects of the crisis in Ukraine. Both sides are working to set possible date and venue for a Putin-Trump meeting. "The conversation was held in a positive and businesslike manner".

In the last weeks of Obama's presidency, the United States expelled Russian diplomats and expanded economic sanctions.

Putin and Trump spoke for the first time by phone in November just after the billionaire tycoon's surprise election victory.

Mr Trump has made it clear he wants to improve ties, provided he can get along with Mr Putin.
