BALTIMORE (WJZ) - A female bobcat has escaped from the Smithsonian's National Zoo

However, Ollie has killed birds inside the enclosure, Smith said.

Ollie was last seen in her enclosure at 7:30 a.m. Monday but did not show up for a feeding three hours later.

Officials are conducting a search in hopes of finding Ollie, and it is believed she may return to familiar surroundings for food and shelter.

American University sent students a text message Monday warning that the animal had escaped.

Ollie is probably still nearby, but Saffoe said recapturing her is no sure thing.

The Zoo cautions that anyone who sees the bobcat should not approach her. The bobcat exhibit is closed until Ollie is found, the zoo said.

The National Zoo's associate director of animal care, Brandie Smith, said in a statement that zookeepers believe Ollie escaped through a small hole in the mesh fence meant to keep her inside. DC owners of pomeranians and fancy chickens may wish to keep their pets inside. The 25-pound bobcat was born in the wild and is estimated to be nearly 7-years-old. "She's very standoffish", said the National Zoo's "curator of great cats", said Craig Saffoe at a news conference. The likelihood that we get her back? In the wild, they eat rabbits, hares, squirrels and mice.

Ollie is not the only zoo animal missing from her enclosure.

"She is a carnivore, so for small birds, small animals in the area, which could even include small cats and dogs, she could be a threat", Smith said Monday.
