NIAC Statement on Trump Administration's Iran Sanctions Designations

The Trump administration imposed sanctions on Friday against 25 individuals and companies involved in procuring ballistic missile technology for Iran.

Eight of the individuals are listed as Iranian citizens, three appear to be Chinese, and two Arab.

President Trump imposed new sanctions on Friday after Iran tested medium-range missiles last Sunday and because of its support for Yemeni rebels.

"The President and national security adviser wants to put Iran on notice but haven't specified what that is", a reporter asked Spicer at the daily briefing. The official said the United States wants to work with Iran when it abides by its global commitments, but would continue to pressure Iran to change its behaviour. "You will see us call them out as we said we would".

Iran immediately hit back, lambasting the threats as coming from "an inexperienced person" and pledging to impose reciprocal measures.

Iran has confirmed that it had tested a ballistic missile, but denied that it violated the terms of the nuclear deal.

But Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted on Friday that the Islamic Republic was unmoved by USA threats.

Foreign nationals who provide support for them could be subject to additional US sanctions, a senior administration official said.

Writing on Twitter before unveiling the penalties, Mr Trump said: "Iran is playing with fire - they don't appreciate how "kind" President Obama was to them".

Analysts said Iran could interpret Flynn's warning as bluster given that the Trump administration is still formulating a response.

During a news conference Thursday, House Speaker Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican, said he supported additional sanctions on Iran. "Not me!", Trump had tweeted. Trump had said in his election campaign that he would restrict missile programme of Iran.

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on January 31 and referred the matter to its committee on Iran for an investigation.

In Japan at the time, Mr Mattis signalled that the USA would take a tough stance on Iran compared to Mr Trump's predecessor.

Flynn said that instead of being thankful to the United States for the nuclear deal, "Iran is now feeling emboldened".
