United States district court judge blocks Trump's travel ban

Vice President Mike Pence defended President Donald Trump's criticism of a federal judge who blocked an executive action temporarily barring immigrants and refugees from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering entry the U.S.

Trump's executive order restricts immigration from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen for at least 90 days, curbs the entry of refugees for 120 days, and closes off entry by Syrian refugees indefinitely.

The government has since scurried to appeal the judge's order, plunging Mr Trump's new administration into a crisis that has challenged the president's authority - and ability to fulfill campaign promises.

The judge ordered federal defendants "and their respective officers, agents, servants, employees, attorneys and persons acting in concert or participation with them are hereby enjoined and restrained from" enforcing the executive order.

Pence went on to say he finds it frustrating that a federal judge would suspend a legally executed executive order created to protect homeland security.

President Trump has promised to overturn the "ridiculous" ruling and even launched a personal attack on Mr Robart, describing him as a "so-called judge" in a series of ill-tempered tweets.

The Justice Department motion filed in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals seeks an administrative stay of the Seattle federal judge's restraining order, pending consideration of an appeal from the government.

He wrote that the decision "essentially takes law enforcement away from our country".

Trump also sent out a few statements of his own on Saturday morning, posting tweets insisting that the ban was about safety and security, and asserting, without evidence, that unnamed Middle Eastern countries agreed with it.

The State Department said nearly 60,000 visas had been suspended because of Trump's ban. The State Department announced on Saturday that it would reinstate around 60,000 visas, and the Department of Homeland Security announced that it won't direct airlines to keep visa-holders covered by the immigration ban from boarding US-bound planes, The Associated Press reports.

At the same time, though, the White House said in a statement that the Justice Department would "at the earliest possible time" file for an emergency stay of the "outrageous" ruling from the judge.
