Sen. John McCain vs. President Donald Trump

The White House has called the raid a "success" because of the intelligence gathered, and said that anyone who says otherwise owes an apology for disparaging Owens' memory. During the raid, the terrorists killed US Navy SEAL William Owens and injured several other servicemen.

But at Wednesday's press briefing, Spicer took exception, saying that the raid was a success, and that "anyone who would suggest that it is not does a disservice to the life of Chief Ryan Owens".

President Donald Trump has started another war of words with Arizona Sen.

Trump's comments are the latest attacks on McCain, who he famously derided for being a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War early in the GOP primary with the line "I like people who weren't captured". "Disagree with politics ANY single day but how dare anyone question the honor of my father and his service", McCain tweeted, a reference to injuries Sen.

Update: Trump turned to Twitter this morning to criticize McCain for telling the truth about the raid in Yemen, saying it "emboldens the enemy!"

Yemen's foreign minister said Wednesday his country has asked for a "reassessment" of a USA raid last month that killed several women and children, but denied reports that his government has requested a suspension of American ground operations. Neither Trump nor Blumenthal fought in the war after receiving multiple deferments, though Blumenthal did serve in the Marine Corps Reserve.

The comment sparked a firestorm of criticism from both parties, but McCain continued to support Trump as the party's nominee until just before the election.

The lawmakers said that operations against al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), thought to pose the largest threat of any affiliate to USA national security, "must remain a top priority".

Trump said that the Navy SEAL who was slain in the mission was a "hero" and reminded McCain that Secretary of Defense General James Mattis described the conflict-ridden mission in Yemen as a success, not a failure. The first is the Trump World's increasingly unsafe approach to dissent: to hear the White House tell it, to accurately characterize a failed mission is to dishonor the troops.

McCain later used his POW history as a way to explain his opinion on what makes for a successful mission. "Because the mission failed did not in any way diminish their courage and willingness to help their fellow Americans who were held captive. Mr. Spicer should know that story".
