ICE raids spark immigration fears, rumors in California and on social media

ICE raids spark immigration fears, rumors in California and on social media

"Every day, as part of routine targeted enforcement operations, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Fugitive Operations teams arrest criminal aliens and other individuals who are in violation of our nation's immigration laws", Cox said in a statement.

David Marin, ICE's field office director for enforcement and removal operations in greater Los Angeles, said an enforcement sweep in California was in the planning stages "before the administration came out with their current executive orders".

In all, Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested about 160 people during a five-day sweep in Southern California aimed at immigrants with criminal histories and deportation orders, including a Salvadoran gang member wanted in his country and a Brazilian drug trafficker. The exact number of people arrested is not known.

Still, the Post reports that some noncriminal immigrants were detained because they were in the vicinities where authorities were sweeping for the criminal immigrants.

During the campaign, Trump's promise to deport undocumented immigrants - at one point he floated the idea of a deportation force - shifted to focusing on those with criminal backgrounds.

Federal immigration officials declined Friday to say how many people had been detained in the recent raids. Fischer stressed this is no time for speculative alarm - something that's become a social media mainstay.

California Senate President Pro Tem Kevin De León, D-Los Angeles, took to Twitter to speak out against ICE's actions.

In Austin, a liberal enclave with a brand new "sanctuary" policy at the local jail, Gonzalez Gutierrez said the raid was the most extensive he'd seen since he arrived in the Texas capital nearly two years ago.

"The rash of these recent reports about ICE checkpoints and random sweeps, that's all false and that's risky and irresponsible", he said.

He said ICE needs to clarify whether these people "are in fact unsafe, violent threats to our communities, and not people who are here peacefully raising families and contributing to our state". "He said that regardless of the criminal offense, the individuals" "luck ran out'".

Protesters attempted to block an ICE van carrying Guadalupe Garcia Reyes and several were arrested. A government aide familiar with the raids said it is possible the predominantly daytime operations - a departure from the Obama administration's night raids - meant to "send a message to the community that the Trump deportation force is in effect".

"Any person who an immigration officer considers to be posing a threat can be picked up legally by this executive order", she said.

He won anyway. Now I am puzzled by those who have an issue with Trump taking action against sanctuary cities and making it more hard for people to cross our southern border illegally. Notably, experts have challenged Trump's estimates of the number of undocumented immigrants who have been convicted of crimes.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order last month thatmoved forward on hiring thousands of immigration agents, stripped funding from so-called sanctuary cities that don't help enforce federal immigration laws and called for the construction of a massive wall on the border with Mexico.

ICE spokespeople told media the Los Angeles arrests were routine operations targeting unsafe individuals, and that the deported woman had no legal basis to be in the US.

"Following school buses? Raiding construction sites?"
