Storm drops almost 1 ft. of snow on parts of eastern NY

Blizzard conditions have been confirmed in MA and Rhode Island, including the areas of Boston, Hyannis, Marshfield, New Bedford, Block Island, Providence and Westerly.

A photo shows the Long Island Expressway - a motorway leading to the coastal stretch of land - bare of traffic after almost 15 inches of snowfall. Blizzard warnings have been issued for coastal southeastern MA, including the Cape and Islands, and winter storm warnings have been posted for the remainder of the state.

Snow began falling overnight, following record high temperatures for February in NY on Wednesday, with as much as 10 to 14 inches (25 to 35 centimeters) expected to accumulate during the day.

Expect the flakes to start falling during the morning commute.

The storm is expected to have passed over the city completely by the early evening.

What is lake-effect snow

Wednesday saw temperatures of almost 60 degrees in New York City, and Thursday will be a little, er, different. Roughly 10 inches were reported in areas closer to Boston. Boston should get about a foot of snow, with Springfield and Fitchburg, also in MA, seeing a few inches less. "Temperatures are in the low to mid-30s in the I-95 corridor", and still in the 40s in parts of South Jersey, like Millville and Cape May, where the weather service received some reports of lightning this morning.

Snow is falling and it is 30 degrees, but feels more like 18, with winds at 19 miles per hour.

And for anyone not believing we could get snow after a day in the 60s, it actually happened before - last in March 2007 when we got inches of snow a day after a day in the upper 60s.

If you have a flight in the next few days from Hancock heading to one of those sites - there's a good chance it's going to be impacted by the storm. Bus service is not operating for the day, and officials urged residents to stay off roads due to the snowy, wintry conditions. Gov. Charlie Baker asked all residents to stay home if possible. "When the snow comes in two, three, even four inches in an hour, especially if it's anywhere near the morning rush hour, that's just debilitating, and then we're setting ourselves up for a very bad situation all around".

In Portsmouth, New Hampshire, about 100 people turned out for a snowball fight.
