'Sudden death' of Kim Jong Un's half-brother investigated

'Sudden death' of Kim Jong Un's half-brother investigated

Two women poisoned Kim Jong Nam, a 45-year-old who at one point was being groomed to take over North Korea once his father died, Monday at an airport in Kuala Lumpur, according to South Korea's TV Chosun.

The media reports said the brother, Kim Jong Nam, the eldest son of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, was killed on Monday morning. The men deliberated on a response in a dining room at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club, in full view of other diners. The most spectacular among them was the 2013 execution by anti-aircraft fire of his uncle, Jang Song Thaek, once considered the country's second most powerful man, for what the North alleged was treason.

Oh Shin-hwan, a spokesman for the conservative Bareun Party, said members of his party "cannot help but be dismayed at the "fearpolitik" of Kim Jong Un" while urging a closer examination to see whether the incident would affect national security.

That's when the world moved their eyes "to Kim Jong Chol and Kim Jong Un, Kim Jong Il's sons through another woman who became the leader's companion".

The suspects reportedly fled the scene in a taxi, but Malaysian law enforcement officials believe that North Korea was behind the attack, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said. Although there was scant evidence that Kim Jong Nam was plotting against the North Korean leader, he provided an alternative for North Koreans who would want to depose his brother.

The man reportedly said that the Chinese government was monitoring him, saying in 2012: "The Chinese government is protecting me, but it is also monitoring me too".

Regardless, it underscores the transience of power North Korea.

Jong-nam is survived by his son, Kim Han-sol, who is now a college student in France and has been under police protection since 2013.

Kim Jong Nam was the most public of all of Kim Jong Il's sons before Kim Jong Un took power, though most remember him for the scandalous headlines he made.

He left North Korea to live with his grandmother in Moscow in 1979, according to North Korea Leadership Watch, a website devoted to the ruling Kim family. In any case, Kim Jong Un has been known to be ruthless about potential rivals, even within his own family.

As of Tuesday, Malaysian officials had yet to classify Kim Jong Nam's death as a homicide.

The North Korean Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has also requested that Jong-nam's body be released to them.

Kim had apparently been ruled out of succeeding his father, in favour of his younger estranged brother, when he expressed a desire to reform North Korea.

"He (Kim Jong Nam) is away, he is secure".

"Personally, I am against third-generation succession", he had told Japan's Asahi TV in 2010.

The cause of death is still unclear, but several South Korean media outlets claim he was poisoned.

"The older brother, Jong-Chul, had the warm heart of a girl", Fujimoto wrote.
