More than 55000 United States bridges structurally deficient

More than 55000 United States bridges structurally deficient

Almost 400 of the structurally deficient bridges have load and weight restrictions for vehicles crossing the structure.

The length of the nation's structurally deficient bridges if placed end-to-end would stretch 1,276 miles, half the distance from NY to Los Angeles, a new examination of federal government data shows. State officials have identified needed repairs on 1,614 bridges, which the state estimates will cost $888 million. If that's all the improvement that can be gained in 12 months, the group says it would take more than 20 years to improve or replace all of the bridges on the list.

"America's highway network is woefully underperforming", said Allison Premo Black, the group's chief of economics who conducted the analysis. "It is outdated, overused, underfunded and in desperate need of modernization", Black says.

The Ohio Department of Transportation responded to the study, if a bridge was deemed unsafe they said they would close it immediately.

The report also points to several bridges in Oakland County and one in Macomb with the most traffic needing attention.

Louisiana's top structurally deficient bridges are in Caddo, Jefferson, Calcasieu, Orleans, Bossier, Ouachita and St. Mary parishes.

Although structurally deficient bridges may still be safe to drive on, they have defects or fix needs that can cause speed or weight limits to be imposed.

The report adds more than 1,300 bridges are posted for load, which means vehicles of a certain size or weight are restricted. Washington D.C. contained the least deficient bridges of the regions tracked with only 9, while Nevada was the state with the least at only 31.

The five states with the most deficient bridges are Iowa with 4,968, Pennsylvania with 4,506, Oklahoma with 3,460, Missouri with 3,195 and Nebraska with 2,361.
