National ICE operation nets 28 arrests in Austin

National ICE operation nets 28 arrests in Austin

Senator Chuck Schumer is concerned about who exactly is being taken into custody. Of those, 84 people in North Carolina now face deportation.

President Donald Trump promised to deport 2 million to 3 million migrants with criminal records on taking office.

"The focus of these targeted enforcement operations is consistent with the routine, targeted arrests carried out by ICE's Fugitive Operations Teams on a daily basis", said Gillian Christensen, acting press secretary for the department.

In Washington, D.C., chanting protesters filled the streets outside the White House this weekend.

"Attendance drops when word of "stops" and raids at workplace circulates", she said. ICE arrested approximately 200 illegal aliens throughout Georgia, North Carolina, and SC and arrested 160 more in 55 communities throughout southern California.

"Now it seems like anyone could be arrested", said Shiu-Ming Cheer, senior staff attorney at the National Immigration Law Center. "And if they would have let me know about it, even after the fact, it would have helped me deal with the community concerns about it".

"Those were individuals that are in the country illegally, so they had no documentation or any right to be here in the country", he said.

Further, 29 of those arrested in Georgia and the Carolinas had reentered the country after being removed.

Marin said that of the ten others, five had impending deportation orders or had been deported and had illegally returned to the United States.

The Secretary did not specify how numerous detained immigrants have been deported nor whether they face trial in the United States for their crimes. In one case, the ICE agency charged one immigrant as a "gang member" because of old speeding tickets and tattoos.

One person was arrested Tuesday on federal identity fraud charges amid a Homeland Security investigation in the Holland area, according to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement official.

Trump commented on the arrests in a joint news conference with Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday.

A spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement said there was no activity, despite immigrant advocates saying otherwise - comments that were reflected in numerous news reports beginning Friday.

After raids running through the week led to 680 arrests, ICE issued a statement announcing it had 'launched a series of targeted enforcement operations across the country'.

"We have really done a great job", he said.

"A lot of people were afraid to leave their homes", Reyes said.

Trump's executive order does give ICE officials the power to use their own discretion when making an arrest.
