Nazi-era German anthem at tennis tournament sparks outrage

The offensive first stanza has been banned in Germany since the end of the Second World War, but it was precisely those bars that were played during the opening ceremony of the quarter final match on Saturday between the Alison Riske of the USA and Germany's Andrea Petkovic.

CNN reported that the USTA released a statement apologizing for the performance, but not before German tennis star Andrea Petkovic told reporters the song choice was "the epitome of ignorance."Reuters noted that Petkovic added: "I've never felt more disrespected in my whole life, let alone in Fed Cup". And again, it's not the worst that ever happened to me in my LIFE.

Before Germany's Andrea Petkovic and Alison Riske of the USA took the court in Hawaii, a singer inadvertently performed a long-banned Nazi-era version of the country's national anthem.

It has apologised, tweeting that the mistake would not occur again.

The anthem that should have been sang is called "Deutschlandlied" but instead the crowd listen to the words of "Deutschland Uber Alles" which translates to Germany above everything. The singing of the verse brought a stern response from Petkovic and an official statement of apology from the United States Tennis Association.

Petkovic and her teammates were angered on Saturday when an American soloist sang an old version of the German anthem that begins with a stanza considered overtly nationalist - "Deutschland, Deutschland ueber alles" - a reference to German supremacy. "But it is the worst that happened to me in my Fed Cup life".

"Honestly, it's been a really tough week for us", said Petkovic, who took to Twitter on Sunday to elaborate on her feelings about the anthem mix-up. "But news got around to us and it's extremely unfortunate".

The tournament is the largest worldwide team competition in women's tennis.

After exchanging profuse apologies, the USA team beat Germany, and will now challenge the Czech Republic in the semifinals, with both a hard-won win and a hard-won diplomatic lesson under its belt.
