Trump's contested pick for labor secretary withdraws: White House

Andrew Puzder says he is withdrawing as President Donald Trump's nominee for labor secretary. President Trump has yet to post any tweets on the matter, but at least one person out there is already thinking about a bold nomination he can put forward to recover from this setback. "I'm honored to have been considered and am grateful to all who have supported me". His hearing was scheduled for Thursday morning.

The fast food executive is the first of Trump's cabinet nominees to withdraw.

Democrats on the panel who opposed Puzder were vowing to show racy images of bikini-clad models eating hamburgers that appeared in television commercials run by his restaurant chains. "I think it's reflective of the lack of financial resources Puzder's industry has been willing to put into modern day campaigns, which take a well-organized public affairs, lobbying, and grassroots effort in order to be successful". AFSCME President Lee Saunders said Puzder had "nothing but contempt for everything the Labor Department stands for".

"I expect straightforward and clear answers", Sen.

"This is a win for working families in MI and across the country", she said. The businessman is a vocal critic of federal minimum wage increases and expanded eligibility for overtime pay.

Andy Puzder on Wednesday withdrew his nomination to be President Trump's Labor secretary, avoiding what would have been a rocky confirmation battle.

In 2016, Puzder was an avid Trump supporter. Robert Cresanti, president and CEO of the International Franchise Association, said the fast food CEO would have reversed Obama-era policies that "paralyzed small businesses". The Trump administration has yet to name a new nominee for either position.

Senate Democrats, led by Murray, ranking member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, had driven that research and then publicized the stories; Politico's Marianne Levine and Tim Noah published the "Oprah" tape.

Thune's hesitancy is notable because his leadership role makes him responsible for helping to build support for big-ticket GOP causes.

On the other hand, conservative blogs and news outlets criticized Puzder's well-documented views on immigrant labor because, as he's quoted saying, "immigrants appreciate what America offers".

Puzder revealed to a Senate committee this month that he was unaware of the woman's immigration status when he hired her. "We have fully paid back taxes to the IRS and the State of California and submitted all required paperwork".
