New Dads Also Susceptible to Postpartum Depression, Scientists Reveal

New Dads Also Susceptible to Postpartum Depression, Scientists Reveal

Since fathers have an integral role to play in the development of their children, they ought to be careful lest sadness and melancholia take over their psyches at the very moment when a bundle of joy is about to enter their lives.

"Discussing the risks of depression with expectant mothers and fathers would provide information about where to seek help and social support should one of them develop symptoms".

"New dads who suffer from antenatal and postnatal depression can feel like they're all alone at what can be one of the happiest times of their lives".

The researchers analyzed health questionnaires from more than 3,500 men to draw their conclusions.

The new study reported a handful of causes associated with men experiencing depression after a child's birth: being in fair to poor health, no longer being in a relationship with the child's mother, being unemployed, and having a history of depression.

For women, postpartum depression can be caused-at least in part-by hormonal, chemical, and biological changes that go along with pregnancy and childbirth.

New baby depression is not exclusive to women, but can affect men as well, according to New Zealand research.

The researchers found out that 82 or 2.3 percent of participants experienced elevated prenatal depression symptoms.

But afterwards men are more likely to be depressed if stressed out before the arrival of their child, they had broken up, were ill or lost their job.

"As in many other countries, New Zealand women are assessed for postnatal depression following childbirth", says Dr Underwood.

Fathers are also vulnerable to pregnancy stress, exhibiting elevated levels of depression symptoms while their partners are pregnant and for up to nine months after their child was born, says a New Zealand study.

Depression is just as risky for your heart as obesity and high blood pressure, research revealed last month.

Poor health and stress were said to be aggravating factors for the 217 men who became depressed. "Given the potential for paternal depression to have direct and indirect effects on children, it is important that we recognise and treat symptoms among fathers early". Researchers then ranked the dads' answers on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, which is a scale used to measure depression in women who've just given birth.

You would think that postpartum depression would be limited to the human that literally parted ways with the baby growing inside of them - but as it turns out, dads can get symptoms of postpartum depression, too.

Author of the study Doctor Lisa Underwood said men experiencing depression is not something new.

"This suggests that only at-risk men would benefit from intervention, but all pregnant women, regardless of meeting the criteria for a clinical diagnosis, may benefit from support".
