Americans are now more stressed

Americans are now more stressed

The survey form previous year was conducted online back in August 2016.

While barely more than 40 percent of whites said they were significantly stressed out by the Trump victory, almost 70 percent of blacks reported high stress levels caused by the election results.

"The only ones that have come close to being two-thirds were around 59 to 62 percent, so it was quite striking to see the extent to which people were identifying this as a significant source of stress", Diaz-Granados said.

Stress levels varied by education, with 53% of respondents with more than a high school education reporting very or somewhat significant stress as a result of election outcome, compared to 38% of those with a high school education or less.

The association heard from its members that their patients experienced higher levels of stress ahead of the presidential election.

After noticing a rising number of Americans seeking mental health help after the election, the APA made a decision to analyze stress levels for the first time in its annual survey, which it has conducted for the past 10 years.

The APA reported that Americans' level of stress increases when thinking at the future of their nation. The results of the new report almost overlap with the ones of APA's report from a year ago in which 52% of Americans claimed that presidential election was among their primary concerns, increasing their level of stress.

Maintaining such high levels of constant stress puts a strain on your relationships, work and health, which only increases the stress.

The ones who live in rural areas were not as concerned about the future of their nation as were the ones who live in urban areas. Some symptoms include: 34% have reported specific symptoms such as headaches; 33% feeling overwhelmed; 33% feelings nervous or anxious; and 32% feeling depressed or sad. Now that people are citing politics as a serious stressor in their lives, APA researchers included in their survey questions relating to the country's officials. "It's having a much larger impact, and it likely has to do with this global sense of uncertainty, divided-ness and this unprecedented speed of change", she said.

She advised: "If the 24-hour news cycle is causing you stress, limit your media consumption".

The APA recommends those experiencing stress related to the election and the political climate should perhaps take a break from the news and do something else. "And keep in mind to take care of yourself and pay attention to other areas of your life", Nordal said.
