Moreno beating Lasso in 1st round of Ecuador's presidential election

Lenin Moreno, 63, a disabled former vice-president, needs 40 percent of valid votes and a 10 percentage point difference with his nearest rival to avoid a second round on April 2 and continue a decade of left-wing rule in the Andean country. The National Electoral Council, CNE, said the final result of Sunday's presidential election will be released by Thursday. However, a poll conducted by Opina Ecuador gave Moreno 42.9 percent of the vote versus Lasso's 27.7 percent.

Guillermo Lasso, Moreno's main electoral rival and a conservative who has vowed to reduce government spending and taxes, said the delays "did not smell right". A small group of Lasso's supporters gathered outside the National Electoral Council, saying they would guard against any attempt to manipulate the results, though they offered no evidence of that happening.

Speaking to RT Spanish on Monday, Moreno stated, "One thing that is clear is that Assange will have to reduce meddling in the policies of the nations we have friendly relations with".

Mr Moreno was critical of Mr Lasso's call for Ecuadoreans to take to the streets if there was no second round.

"We have 45,000 volunteers who are watching over the count to confirm what we already know: that there will be a runoff in Ecuador", Lasso told cheering supporters in Guayaquil earlier in the evening when the exit polls were known. Expected to decide the race were a third of voters who until recently declared themselves undecided amid low-energy campaigning as the charismatic Correa prepares to retire from politics.

Should Ecuador move to the right with a second-round victory for Lasso, it would follow on the heels of Argentina, Brazil and Peru which have all swerved away from the left as a China-led commodities boom ended.

He would remove Wikileaks founder Julian Assange from the country's embassy in London by late June and take a firm stance against Venezuela's socialist government.

Moreno, a key figure in Correa's cabinet between 2007 and 2013, had been predicted to win the vote.

The contest put Correa's legacy on the line as well.

The analysts speculated that the delay in announcing the vote result would help unify opposition support for Lasso.

"This trend is established but the CNE will officially report when we have 100 percent of records recorded throughout the country", Juan Pablo Pozo said.

Also seeking the presidency was Cynthia Viteri, a conservative ex-congresswoman, and Paco Moncayo, the former mayor of the capital, Quito.

A fugitive former oil minister regularly accuses Moreno's running mate Jorge Glas, the former head of Strategic Sectors, of being "the ringleader" of a graft operation at Petroecuador.
