AMD's Ryzen Launched With Specs That Outperform Intel's i7

Today, AMD unveiled their new powerhouse chip at a special event in San Francisco. The release date and price have not been officially confirmed yet for this new AMD CPU.

All three Ryzen 7 models have eight cores and support 16 threads. The 7 series is an eight-core, sixteen thread processor, a first for AMD.

Ryzen 7 1800X: 8C/16T, 3.6 GHz base, 4.0 GHz turbo, 95W, $499. AMD might also launch Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 3 chips soon which will be targeted at mid-range and entry-level market respectively, PCWorld reported. This CPU again has a 95 Watt TDP and is going to cost you 399 United States dollars. This unit as well is unlocked and the pricing now is confirmed to be 329 United States dollars. General availability will begin on or around March 2nd. Su showed the details of the tests during the show, which you can see below.

Considering the prices of the Ryzen 7 CPUs, AMD may start a price war in the CPU competition. Overclocking is as easy as can be. The next evolution of Wraith includes Wraith Spire and Wraith Stealth, offering reliable, near-silent performance enthusiasts expect from the Wraith brand.

Switching down to the Ryzen 7 1700X, its comfortably faster than the $425 Core i7-6800K's 1,108 score. That processor also only has a 65 Watt TDP. This last bit may explain why Intel PR sent out a last-minute "call us before you write" email to most of the press, but not SemiAccurate, after hours last night. I have recorded these videos available for you, shaky cam, my apologies for that but you get the generic idea. But if you've held off on Ryzen before building your next rig, well - the wait is over. Have a peek, and then next week during availability we'll have our review up as well. The results have been nothing short of impressive. This chip performs similar to the rival Intel Core i7-6900K which costs over $1000. What's even more exciting is the fact that AMD has claimed that their high-end Ryzen 7 1800X outperforms the Intel counterpart. These specific variants on the Ryzen 7 were front and center: The 1800X, the 1700x, and the 1700. For the Ryzen launch today, AMD is stating that the final result of that goal is a 52% gain in IPC. The last chip of the lot is the Ryzen 1700 which runs on a base clock speed of 3.0 GHz and jumps up to 3.7 GHz. "Ryzen processors with SenseMI technology represent the bold and determined spirit of innovation that drives everything we do at AMD".

All three AMD Ryzen 7 processors are available for pre-order worldwide. For Intel, that number is not anything serious, but for AMD, after years of playing second fiddle to Intel's chips, are now getting a good reception. It's still too early to tell how much impact Ryzen will have.
