Authorities: Suspect arrested in case of missing teacher

Authorities: Suspect arrested in case of missing teacher

Grinstead was a local beauty contest victor who taught at Irwin County High School. He had graduated about three years prior to her disappearance.

After 12 years, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has a break in beauty queen, Tara Grinstead's disappearance.

A news release from the GBI said foul play was immediately suspected and a massive search was conducted.

Grinstead's body was never found, and her case inspired a podcast called "Up and Vanished" that debuted in 2016.

The case has stumped authorities for more than a decade.

A search of Grinstead's home produced very little evidence making the search for her very hard, the release said. Though they have received many tips over the years, none led to credible information.

The GBI declined to say how they believe Grinstead died or if they have found her remains.

Ryan Alexander Duke, the man accused of killing Tara Grinstead, made his first appearance in court Thursday afternoon.

Investigators did talk with Grinstead's family members Wednesday, he said. But her keys and purse were missing.

Grinstead's stepmother, Connie Grinstead, said in Thursday's press conference that Duke's arrest is "another chapter in a long and painful journey", WSB reported.

Witnesses say they last saw her at a beauty pageant and then at a friend's party.
