Dylann Roof stopped at 2nd AME church after shooting

Newly unsealed court records in Roof's federal trial indicate that after he shot and killed nine people attending a Bible study at the historic Emanuel AME Church on June 17, 2015, Roof drove 20 miles to Branch AME Church in Jedburg.

Dylann Roof, the white supremacist terrorist who killed nine churchgoers in a racially motivated hate crime in Charleston in 2015, had lists of other black churches in his auto the day of the murders and had targeted them for further killings, according to court documents released Tuesday. Roof, an avowed white supremacist, told Federal Bureau of Investigation officials that he was. Branch AME is an estimated 30 minutes away from Emanuel, and was also hosting a Bible study that night.

The GPS data also showed that Roof had driven by Branch AME about four months before the shooting, on February 27, 2015, prosecutors said.

In the motion, Roof's attorneys argued his case happened entirely in SC and involved only "incidental and everyday use" of areas affected by the commerce clause, like the internet or purchases from another state.

Roof must still face a death penalty trial in state court, which was postponed during his federal trial and has not been rescheduled.

Prosecutors were responding to a motion filed earlier this month by Roof's lawyers, who are seeking to throw out his death sentence in favor of a life prison term by targeting the charges eligible for capital punishment.

After his arrest, Roof told officers that he had researched other black churches.

The documents contradicted defense arguments that there was no evidence suggesting a second church attack.

His attorneys subsequently asked for a new federal trial, claiming the government failed to prove the religious obstruction charges against him in the original trial.
