Protest In Anaheim Over Video Of Off-Duty Officer Firing Gun Turns Violent

Protest In Anaheim Over Video Of Off-Duty Officer Firing Gun Turns Violent

"An officer, even off-duty, has an obligation to follow the law and protect public safety, rather than threaten it", said Jennifer Rojas of the ACLU of Southern California. At that point, the officer pulls out a weapon and appears to fire a single shot into the ground and the teens can be seen scattering.

According to police spokesman Daron Wyatt, 24 protesters - including 10 men, 8 women, and 6 juveniles - were arrested, and there were reports of windows being broken and other acts of vandalism. They took over the area of Euclid Street and Palais Road, where the fracas occurred, and clogged intersections Wednesday night.

The city of about 350,000 people south of Los Angeles was roiled in 2012 by demonstrations following the fatal police shootings of two unarmed Latino men.

In response, hundreds of protesters have gathered near the home of the officer in Anaheim, calling for police to arrest the man for child abuse related to the incident.

The now-viral video appears to show the unidentified officer clutching onto the young teen while being confronted by the boy's friends. The LAPD is conducting its own internal investigation into the officer's actions.

Though the video, which was recorded on a cellphone, definitely depicts some sort of confrontation between an adult man and a group of teenagers, the Anaheim Police Department has not confirmed the video clip's validity. The teen says that the officer is hurting him and tells him to "let me go".

The mayor of Anaheim, Tom Tait, said in a statement that the city is committed to thoroughly investigating the incident.

Christian was arrested for allegedly making a criminal threat at the officer and a 15-year-old who tried to help him was arrested for assault and battery, .

"That was the most frightening part of it all", the 13-year-old's mother said. "While officers were responding, additional information was received the adult was an off-duty LAPD officer, he had discharged his firearm, and was detaining at least one of the juveniles".

A spokesperson for the LAPD told HuffPost on Wednesday that it has launched an administrative investigation into the incident, adding that the off-duty officer is not now facing any charges.

Video of the confrontation between the off-duty officer and the teens has been widespread on social media and the focus of regional television news reports.

The officer was knocked into a bush by another teen, but continued to hold onto the other boy. As more teens approached, the officer pulled his gun and fired once. Police asked the protesters to disperse, or face arrest.

"I said, 'Hey, that's not how you treat a lady, '" the boy said.

In a Facebook post, Anaheim police released the following statement: "The Anaheim Police Department is aware of the numerous videos posted on YouTube regarding yesterday's Officer Involved Shooting involving an off-duty LAPD officer".

Once the investigation is completed the results will be forwarded to the Orange County District Attorney's Office for review, Wyatt said.

While nobody was hit by the gun shot, the Anaheim Police Department are investigating the matter. In the meantime, the off-duty officer in the videos is on paid administrative leave.

A full investigation into the situation is still underway.
