FCC opens bandwidth to new LTE-U technology

FCC opens bandwidth to new LTE-U technology

T-Mobile said it is forging ahead with a spring deployment of LTE for unlicensed spectrum (LTE-U) in the wake of the FCC's certification Wednesday of the first equipment for the technology.

If the phone is new, it might be already supported with LTE-U on the hardware level, at least.

LTE-U won't expand a given carrier's coverage, but it aims to improve LTE service in crowded areas like offices, stadiums, and denser city environments.

"LTE-U will make it possible for T-Mobile to bring its forthcoming Gigabit LTE to more places across the country". Just keep in mind that you'll need a device that supports this feature to take advantage of the improvements that it offers. "Network density is increasing to meet the demands of customers, and following the FCC's aggressive action on 5G spectrum, the time is right to deliver the next generation of broadband services with 5G".

The idea is that the LTE-U devices will allow telcos to share a portion of the band as an unlicensed spectrum space, where multiple carriers can move data.

Today's announcement comes alongside the news that the FCC has authorized the first LTE-U devices in the 5GHz band, which FCC Chairman Ajit Pay described as a "significant advance in wireless innovation and a big win for wireless consumers". As with its predecessor, LTE-U lets consumers connect to the internet from nearly anywhere they have cell service. "The grants issued today are for the ability for the devices to operate under Part 15 rules in the 5 GHz band". Known as LTE-U, the technology may result in a faster, smoother mobile experience. Fears had been raised that the technology was bound to affect the speeds of Wi-Fi though this is not so as signals are not transmitted through busy Wi-Fi channels but rather through those that are not in use.

"Ericsson welcomes the FCC's approval of LTE-U". "We stand ready to enhance T-Mobile's leadership proposition and show what the future of mobile communications can be for Un-carrier customers".

In particular, the fight has pitted cable companies - whose customers rely on Wi-Fi routers to connect to the internet - against cellular carriers whose users are consuming an ever growing amount of mobile data.
