Koeman disappointed with lack of tempo against Black Cats

Koeman disappointed with lack of tempo against Black Cats

The 23-year-old has been suffering from a calf strain and did not travel with the rest of Koeman's squad to Dubai earlier this week for a warm weather training camp.

David Moyes hopes Sunderland can build on their second-half showing against Everton after they were beaten 2-0 at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Another player nearly ready to return to the first team fold is Jan Kirchhoff, who returned to training this week after a spell on the sidelines.

Moyes certainly didn't mince his words in regards to his aims for the weekend: "I want to go back to Everton and win".

"While we were 1-0 down we were always in with a chance in the game and we couldn't play any worse than we did in the first half".

"We have a lot of games, the spirit is to keep fighting".

"We couldn't have played any worse than in the first half; I wanted them to be braver and I felt we did that [in the second half]".

"I told them that and told them to take the ball more and be a bit braver".

Sunderland upped their game after the break and produced a much-improved second-half display, with Jermain Defoe hitting the crossbar moments before Everton scored their second.

Joel Robles should continue in goal for the Merseyside club and he has shown some strong performances recently to overtake Maarten Stekelenburg as the number one option.

Sunderland best chance of the game fell to Jermain Defoe in the 78th minute, with the former England worldwide striker skinning two defenders before unleashed an unstoppable drive goalward. "It was never going to be an easy game".

The Black Cats had a period where it seemed as if they were on the brink of mounting a serious survival fight but they were rudely brought back to Earth by a re-energised Southampton side who thrashed them 4-0 in their last Premier League outing.

"A few of the teams have had theirs".
