8-year-old shot to death after crash in Houston

8-year-old shot to death after crash in Houston

An 8-year-old girl was shot and killed early Saturday in Houston, just moments after she was involved in a auto crash with her mother.

The crash and subsequent shooting took place on West Fuqua Street near Sam Houston Parkway. The other driver fled in a dark, four-door sedan.

DeMaree Atkins was sitting in the backseat of her mother Toyia Thomas' Honda Accord as it headed east on Sam Houston Parkway when a white Pontiac slammed into the vehicle.

Paramedics transported DeMaree to the hospital, where she later died.

After the crash, the driver of the Pontiac jumped into the sedan, Thomas said.

Whomever was in the other auto ran off and another vehicle pulled up. "She didn't. She was only eight", Thomas told KPRC. Her daughter DeMaree Adkins was in the backseat of the vehicle.

"The light was green, and as soon as I got to the light it turned yellow - I couldn't stop", Thomas said.

That's when Thomas noticed the blood on her jacket. Thomas said, "Each one of those bullets hit the back of my auto where my baby was".

About that time, a woman had gotten out of the auto that had pulled up behind Thomas' Honda. Thomas said the woman began firing at her and her daughter. "Her body just went limp". She was an honor roll student who was just beginning to learn how to play the violin. "They took my baby away from me, why?" "I kept trying to talk to her". It's not clear if they were racing or if it was a road rage incident, or something else. "We just don't know". Wish I could polish her nails, her toenails.

Thomas believes that someone knows something about the identity of the woman who shot and killed her daughter and the driver who initially crashed into her vehicle.
