Mount Etna, Europe's Largest Active Volcano, Erupts on Sicily

Mount Etna, Europe's Largest Active Volcano, Erupts on Sicily

At 10,900 feet high, Mount Etna is Europe's largest active volcano.

"The 2002 eruption has been described in many reports as a highly unusual event for Etna, and really, this eruption has been one of the most explosive flank eruptions of this volcano in recent times".

Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy is erupting after being mostly dormant for the last two years. The eruptions can last days, and sometimes even weeks.

Lava flows have often threatened the villages surrounding the crater.

The eruption of Mount Etna is slowly beginning to slow by Tuesday night, according to NBC News.

Mount Etna is at it again.

Must have been pretty cool for anyone on holiday in the nearby city of Catania and the resort town of Taormina - the giant orange fountains of lava could be seen spewing towards the sky from these spots.

There was no danger to the towns on the mountain, they added. A team of US marines lent a hand during the aptly named Operation Volcano Buster, dropping concrete blocks at the edge of the lava tunnel to plug the hole. Though Catania-Fontanarossa Airport has remained open without disruption, meteorologists have said that the ash spewed across the upper levels of the atmosphere could affect air quality and weather in the latter parts of the week. A drone filmed the volcanic activity and displaying the boiling lava sliding down the snow-ridden volcano.

This Sicilian landmark also has one of the world's longest documented records of historical eruptions, dating back to at least 1,500 B.C.E.
