Trump administration pushes back signing new travel ban, official says

Trump administration pushes back signing new travel ban, official says

Trump is expected to sign the new measure Wednesday after federal courts suspended his first order.

The Trump administration has chose to exclude Iraq from its list of countries whose citizens are temporarily banned from traveling to the USA, according to White House officials.

The officials also said the order will exclude explicit exemption for religious minorities in the countries targeted by the travel ban.

The initial order that came at the end of January led to mass protests in the country and overseas after many people were left stranded at airports waiting to reunite with family members.

The president and his aides said they will not give up and will return with a new order, saying they felt extreme vetting was necessary to keep out "bad dudes", as Trump has said in multiple tweets and remarks.

The president was prepared to sign a new ban after an appeal court halted his original executive order. A senior administration official told CNN that they don't want to undercut coverage of the president's speech.

The Journal described the version that exempted existing visa holders as a "late draft" that could change before Trump signs the official order. They had urged the White House to reconsider Iraq's inclusion given its key role in fighting the Islamic State group, it added.

Four officials say the administration's decision follows pressure from the Pentagon and State Department.

Civic right lawyers and activists swung into action in the U.S., and challenged the order in court, and obtained a stay in NY.

The government initially blocked even USA green card holders before offering those legal permanent residents special permission to come into the country.
