US Strikes in Yemen Target al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula

Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, said on Thursday that more than 20 strikes were "conducted in partnership with the government of Yemen" and were coordinated with President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi. New details of the raid indicate that after the SEALs pushed the al-Qaida terrorists out of their primary residence, they retreated to a nearby building and began indiscriminately firing.

The officials told The Associated Press that USA jets and drones have targeted the district of al-Sawmaa in the province of Bayda during the early hours in the morning.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stressed that such insight was particularly important given the threat that AQAP has long posed. USA officials said 14 militants were killed as well as some civilians.

The official insisted the raid was worth the risk because AQAP has a history of plotting, inspiring, and exporting terror to America and the West, and because the USA has no military presence on the ground, the Examiner reported. The assault took place days after Trump's inauguration.

"The strikes will degrade the AQAP's ability to coordinate external terror attacks and limit their ability to use territory seized from the legitimate government of Yemen as a safe space for terror plotting".

Local news media in Yemen reported that at least three people suspected of being al-Qaida members were killed in the country's southeastern province of Shabwa.

But the raid has faced questions from lawmakers about its utility and execution, with several Trump critics questioning the value of the intelligence, whether the right calculation about the raid's risks was made and whether the result was worth the costs.

AQAP boasts one of the world's most feared bomb makers, Ibrahim Hassan Al-Asiri, and it has been a persistent concern to the U.S. government ever since a 2009 attempt to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day.

A week ago, Human Rights Watch called upon the U.S.to carry out an investigation saying that the USA needs to "go a step further and provide a full accounting of possible laws-of-war violations". Since then, the war exasperated the state of lawlessness and gave al-Qaida freedom of movement and recruitment. The United States has also supported the oil-rich Saudi Arabia with military advisers, logistics and intelligence in addition to billions of dollars in arms.
