Egyptian woman Eman Ahmad undergoes bariatric surgery in Mumbai

Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty could soon lose her title as the world's heaviest woman.

Suffering from a thyroid problem, the 37-year-old Eman gained huge weight, which made it impossible for her to move.

The excessive weight that Eman has gained over the period of two decades, has caused her to suffer many physical stresses confining her to a room which she hardly left. "The hospital is also offering her physiotherapy because her bones and muscles have not developed sufficiently because of immobility", the doctor said. And a special truck was used to ferry her from the airport to the Saifee Hospital in Mumbai where the weight loss surgery was performed.

An Egyptian woman has undergone bariatric surgery in an effort to shed a hefty amount of weight.

Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, who had weighed around 500 kilos (1,100 lbs), lost over 100 kilograms (220 lbs) in order to undergo the surgery.

The Egyptian is still believed to be the world's heaviest woman ahead of American Pauline Potter who the Guinness Book of World Records recorded at 293 kilos in July a year ago. It is increasingly common in India, and is a major destination for medical tourists seeking quality services and no waiting lists at a fraction of the cost of western countries.

She is most likely to return to Alexandria, her home, in two to three weeks and will continue the diet for some time.

Weight has always been a problem for El Aty. The diet helped her drop 14 pounds a day.

She was born weighing a staggering 11 lbs and was shortly diagnosed afterwards with the parasitic disease called Elephantiasis. There is no history of obesity in her family, inclining the doctors to suspect a genetic mutation may be responsible for the uncontrolled weight gain. She also faced some other serious ailments including diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension and sleep deprivation due owing to the problem of heavy weight.

A team of 16 specialists and over eight nurses are looking after her Ahmed. The hospital has been able to raise around 6 million pounds through crowd-sourcing according to the Daily Star.
