Commonwealth Games: Durban will not host in 2022

Commonwealth Games: Durban will not host in 2022

Durban's lost its hosting rights after failing to meet its financial obligations.

A spokesperson for Liverpool city council said: "We had heard rumours that Durban might be unable to deliver the Commonwealth Games in 2022 and have already indicated to the government that we are very willing to host them instead".

She said they will want to have it tidied up in a few months and they are optimistic there are cities interested and capable of meeting the requirements.

A statement from the CGF read: "The Commonwealth Games Federation [CGF] has completed its review of the final information submitted by South Africa on 30th November, 2016 to determine whether their proposals for hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games are consistent with their original bid commitments and the host city contract".

The games were set to open on July 18, 2022, coinciding with the birthday of the late South African President, Nelson Mandela.

Sascoc president Gideon Sam confirmed the news, saying the news was a disappointment to the country and the entire continent. It is already bidding to host the games in 2026.

The announcement came on the same day that Britain's Queen Elizabeth launched the baton relay for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Australia's Gold Coast. "The reality of the situation is that budget vote of our minister for finance doesn't look good, so we were going to take money from here and there".

Durban was awarded the Games in 2015, after preferred option Edmonton, in Canada, pulled out after local opposition.

In a telephone interview, the sports association head claimed that lack of funding from the South African government crippled preparations to the prestigious games.

The CGF is actively looking for a replacement destination and two United Kingdom cities, Liverpool and Birmingham, are interested with Liverpool already throwing the hat in the ring.

"I am confident an alternative host city will be found and that we will have an inspirational Games for the athletes and fans across the Commonwealth".
