Boaty McBoatFace Strikes Back as a Yellow Submarine

Boaty McBoatFace Strikes Back as a Yellow Submarine

A huge majority backed a campaign for the name Boaty McBoatface - but officials rejected the victor and instead chose to name the ship after naturalist and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough.

The supremely silly name "Boaty McBoatface" ran away with the vote, but cooler minds made a decision to name the vessel "RRS Sir David Attenborough" after the popular naturalist and television presenter.

Despite it eventually not being used, it has now resurfaced as the name of the National Oceanography Center's submarine, which will will travel with the Dynamics of the Orkney Passage Outflow (DynOPO) expedition on the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) research ship James Clark Ross, due to depart from Punta Arenas in Chile on March 17. Boaty McBoatface has now topped the poll to name an upcoming polar research vessel.

Well, the government felt the name was inappropriate, but they made a decision to use the silly moniker on one of their new robotic submarines. They will head to an area of the Southern Ocean about 800km from the Antarctic Peninsula, from which they will deploy an array of instruments, including some that will be moored to the seafloor.

The unmanned sub is part of a fleet that will start its mission this Friday in Antarctica before continuing on to the Southern Ocean, according to the National Environment Research Council.

Scientists have been gathering evidence that the Antarctic bottom water is getting warmer, but they have not been able to determine why.

But Boaty McBoatface is already on the job.

"Our goal is to learn enough about these convoluted processes to represent them (for the first time) in the models that scientists use to predict how our climate will evolve over the 21st century and beyond". "Establishing the causes of this warming is important because the warming plays an important role in moderating the ongoing (and likely future) increases in atmospheric temperature and sea level around the globe", says Alberto Naveira Garabato, the expedition research lead and an ocean scientist with the University of Southampton.
