United Kingdom government rejects Scottish independence referendum: "now is not the time"

But Nicola Sturgeon's call for a second independence referendum and Theresa May's refusal to grant one - for now - made the SNP's pre-conference hopes impossible to realise.

"To be talking about an independence referendum will make it more hard for us to be able to get the right deal for Scotland, and the right deal for the United Kingdom".

I've just interviewed Nicola Sturgeon and pressed her on her referendum demand which, with the help of the Greens, will next week be passed by the Scottish parliament.

Earlier on Friday, the SNP's Deputy Leader Angus Robertson accused the Conservatives of "running scared".

Mr Robertson said: "If the Prime Minister refuses to engage on the terms of a referendum before Brexit takes place then she is effectively trying to block the people of Scotland having a choice over their future".

Speaking on RT UK, Galloway shrugged off the idea that those who voted to stay in the European Union will automatically swing the vote for independence.

Speaking on Tuesday, the Scottish government's Brexit minister, Michael Russell, said there would be "absolute clarity" on its position on European Union membership by the time of any second referendum, asking for "patience" in the meantime. "Any bid by the United Kingdom government to block the people of Scotland from making a choice will be untenable, undemocratic and totally unsustainable - and clearly shows that the United Kingdom government recognises it is out of step with the Scottish people", the First Minister of Scotland added.

Ms Dugdale said: "Gordon and I have been working closely together as Labour puts forward an alternative to the constitutional extremes offered by the SNP and the Tories".

The UK's Scottish Minister David Mundell has ruled out any discussion on the procedure to launch a vote now, saying there can be no negotiations on Section 30 of the Scotland Act, the relevant mechanism authorising the Scottish Parliament to act.

"And at the same time, we will pursue the ambitious economic and social reforms we need to make Britain work for working people". "It becomes the will of the democratically-elected Parliament of Scotland". Such assent is a formality - no monarch has refused to sign a bill for more than 300 years.

Minutes after Sturgeon called on Monday for a new referendum, Scottish National Party activists start putting up bunting left over from the 2014 campaign, in Paisley, Scotland.

She said there would be further talks with devolved administrations.

"Tory and nationalist extremism should not rob us of a third option that can give the Scottish people more powers, offer honest answers about how we can pay for our public services and, faced with the post-Brexit threat to our employment and industry, address the urgent issue of how we create new jobs by exporting and trading successfully with Europe and the rest of the world".

But EU negotiators warn it could take two years just to settle the divorce terms, and agreeing on a new relationship for the United Kingdom and the EU could take years longer.
