Kim Jong-nam's identity confirmed with child's DNA: Malaysia

Malaysia will deport 50 North Koreans for overstaying their visas, the deputy prime minister said Tuesday (Mar 14), in an apparent exception to a departure ban after the assassination of Kim Jong-Nam.

While North Korea's Kuala Lumpur embassy has for weeks insisted the dead national, who carried a diplomatic passport, was named 'Kim Chol, ' Malaysian authorities have "confirmed the identity of the body as Kim Jong Nam based on the sample obtained by his child", the AFP news agency quoted the deputy prime minister as saying.

Kim Jong Nam had two gold chains around his neck, one with a pendant engraved with family portraits which "links him directly to his next of kin", the New Straits Times newspaper said, adding that physical features such as tattoos and moles on the body also been useful.

Police said last week they had confirmed he was Kim Jong Nam, but refused to say how.

Kim Jong Nam is the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"It's an effort to preserve the body, because if it is kept in the mortuary it might decompose so we did this to preserve the body", Zahid said. Kim also had on a beaded bracelet and a Patek Philippe watch-a brand of which his North Korean half-sibling Kim Jong Un is a known fan.

The murder has sparked a diplomatic meltdown between two countries with once strong ties. On Monday, they began to discuss the return of Malaysians from North Korea.

A Vietnamese woman and an Indonesian woman have been charged in the case. About 315 North Koreans are in Malaysia.

There are nine Malaysians in North Korea - three embassy staff members and their family members.

North Korea has blamed the United States and South Korea for the high-profile murder.

The attack was caught on surveillance video that shows two women going up to Kim and apparently smearing something on his face.
