Paris airport attacker phoned father to say 'I screwed up'

Paris airport attacker phoned father to say 'I screwed up'

A toxicology result has revealed the attacker at Orly Airport over the weekend had consumed a cocktail of drugs and alcohol.

Toxicology tests conducted on Belgacem's body revealed that he had almost twice the legal limit of alcohol for driving in France in his blood as well as "traces of cocaine and cannabis" in his system.

Interior Minister Bruno Le Roux said the slain man had been linked to an earlier attack on police north of Paris, in which an officer was slightly wounded, and was "known to the police and intelligence services".

According to Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins, the suspect had been imprisoned several times on violence and theft convictions, including one five-year stint that began in 2009.

Yelling that he wanted to kill and die for Allah, Belgacem wrested away the soldier's assault rifle during the Saturday morning airport attack but was shot and killed by her two colleagues before he could fire the military-grade weapon in Orly's busy south terminal.

Belgacem had been flagged as having been radicalized during a spell in detention in 2011-2012, Molins said.

His father told French radio Belgacem had phoned after the first attack to say he had "screwed up with a gendarme", before proceeding to Orly.

"He never prayed and he drank".

The Frenchman allegedly shot another officer earlier in the day during a traffic stop with the cop's own weapon local authorities said.

The searches - authorized under France's official "state of emergency", passed after the Paris attacks - have been frequently criticized as violating the civil liberties of those searched and detained, and rights advocates have pushed the government to define "Islamist radicalism" more clearly. French police said they later found a gas canister, lighter and copy of the Quran inside his backpack.

Ben Belgacem's brother and cousin were released Sunday after they, like the attacker's father, were held for questioning. His flat was among dozens raided during the aftermath of the November 2015 Paris attacks that killed 130 people.

Ben Belgacem later appeared at the bar where he had been the previous night, firing more shots and stealing another vehicle before continuing on to the airport.

A spokesman for the Paris airport authority said that the backlog of travellers stranded by the chaos had been cleared and that passengers were experiencing only "slight delays".

French authorities are treating the attack at Orly airport as a terrorist incident, and have placed three people in custody.

He fired at police with a pellet gun before escaping in a auto that was later found abandoned.

Ninety minutes later, he attacked the military patrol at Orly, causing panic and the shutdown of the city's second-biggest airport.
