JCC Bomb Threats: Police Arrest Teenager In Israel

As NPR has reported, multiple waves of bomb threats targeted Jewish community centers across America over the past three months.

In Washington, the Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed the arrest but had no other comment. It's unclear how numerous threats today's arrestee was responsible for, but investigators are treating him as a central suspect.

The Anti-Defamation League says there have been more than 160 bomb threats at 120 institutions in the US and Canada.

The man is from southern Israel and used masking technology to hide the origins of his communication with his targets, which consisted mainly of synagogues and other public Jewish buildings.

Across the USA this year there have been five waves of bomb threats at JCCs and Jewish schools. The FBI and Justice Department's civil rights division were investigating the incidents.

Earlier this month, a St. Louis resident and former journalist, Juan Thompson, was arrested and charged for making at least eight bomb threats against Jewish community centers and the Anti-Defamation League.

He says the investigation was carried out with the help of the FBI and police from other countries.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said Thursday the suspect's motives are unclear. -Israeli citizen who now lives in Israel, police said.

It is believed that the suspect sent bomb threats to Jewish centers in New Zealand, Australia, Europe and the U.S. The threats caused considerable panic and in most cases, the centers were evacuated. "Investigating hate crimes is a top priority for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and we will continue to work to make sure all races and religions feel safe in their communities and in their places of worship". Several instances of vandalism of Jewish cemeteries, though unrelated, heightened fears of anti-Semitism. The first bomb threat occurred on January 5 - Trump denounced them on February 21. President Trump did condemn the threats, stating that anti-Semitic attacks are "reprehensible," however major Jewish organizations like the American Jewish Congress expressed dismay at Trump's suggestion, urging the president to "clarify his intended meaning".
