Trump tax bill would have been slashed by his plans

Trump tax bill would have been slashed by his plans

The acknowledgement came shortly before MSNBC host Rachel Maddow reported on two pages of Trump's 2005 tax forms on her Tuesday night show. The documents show that Mr. Trump paid $38 million in taxes in 2005, or 25.3 percent of income over $150 million.

Trump said "nobody ever heard of" David Cay Johnson, the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter who claimed to have received Trump's tax returns in the post from an unknown source. That percentage is higher than the roughly 10 percent the average American pays each year - but below the 27.4 percent that taxpayers earning 1 million dollars a year average, according to data from the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation. In October, The New York Times released some of Trump's tax records from 1995 after receiving them in the mail.

"But it's an illegal thing they've been doing it, they've done it before and I think it's a disgrace", Trump told Carlson in an interview for "Tucker Carlson Tonight" on Wednesday.

"You know there is an undercurrent to this". On "The Rachel Maddow Show", he raised the possibility that Trump or one of his associates leaked them.

Trump refused to release his complete tax return for that year or for any other year.

It's unclear who leaked the tax return to Johnston: He said he found it in his mailbox.

If the president's current income is similar to his 2005 tax filings, he may also save money through the House Republican plan to repeal and replace President Barack Obama's health care law.

Maddow tweeted about obtaining the tax documents in the hours before she said she planned to release the details on her show.

Maddow's tweet less than 90 minutes before her show that "we've got Trump's tax returns" set off a social media frenzy. Johnston said it was not illegal to receive them, reported the newspaper. Dictionary.com said its top request for word definition was for "transom", after Johnston described how he received the documents "over the transom", meaning that they arrived unrequested and in this case, in the old-fashioned USA mail - the second time Trump tax returns have come to a reporter that way in recent months.

The White House released a statement before the returns were made public on March 14 on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show," disclosing the information presented in the return as a way to get out ahead of the story.

Maddow carried on with her premise, giving more reasons why the 2005 tax return would need to show that level of income and taxes paid. Without it and the depredations deductions, Trump would have paid just $4 million in taxes in 2005.

"It ought to give you pause that his explanations have never made any factual sense", Maddow said. During his campaign, Trump said he wanted to eliminate this specific tax. Experts say more information is needed to know whether or not Trump has financial conflicts of interest.

"The dishonest media can continue to make this part of their agenda, while the President will focus on his, which includes tax reform that will benefit all Americans", the White House said on Tuesday.
